As people we are wired differently. Some of us have nerves of steel, fully capable of dealing with any and all kinds of life situations, be they challenging and demanding, or pleasant and agreeable. While at the extreme end of the spectrum are those, whose mental and physiological make-up makes them less able to cope with life’s many expectations and one often finds them clutching at straws. Between the two opposites the vast majority fall, riding waves, skirting troughs, but by and large staying relatively stable. But just for today, let us focus our discussion on the second category of people, the ones who tend to lean on straws!
Now what are these straws? What are these props that make them feel secure? Are they really crutches or just escape mechanisms that provide temporary respite. Yes, we are talking about additions, alcohol dependency and drug abuse. Narcotics that dull pain, but can’t make problems go away. Alcohol and drug addicts are society’s weaker members who need care and attention, and not ridicule and shame. Fortunately, in the times we live, Addiction Treatment centers exist that are sensitive to patients needs. Programs are designed such that they gently help patients recover and acquire strength.
For instance while a Drug Rehab course may include sessions on aiding their ‘students’ as patients are referred to in-house, change their perceptions about events and situations, an Alcohol Rehab therapeutic training schedule could include sessions on allowing uncomfortable feelings to rise to the surface and thereafter addressing them. Apart from detoxing the body, addiction treatment centers also make concerted attempts to cleanse and heal the mind, an aspect of the human psyche that is so critical for simple every day living.
Therefore, let us end by the dialogue by congratulating the sincere efforts being put in by treatment centers across the country. Without their sensitive and compassionate approach, society’s more needy members would be left with fewer places to rest. A of applause and a big thank you drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, please accept our heartfelt appreciation!
